Of all the consultants you are likely to encounter when running a small business, a good accountant is perhaps the most valuable one to have, along with maybe a solicitor. By having someone on hand to keep your accounts up to date and in order you will be able to concentrate fully on running your business day to day.

It could be very dangerous to your company to select the wrong accountant, someone who is either not qualified or negligent of your business can do harm than good. Here are a few tips to use when looking for a suitable accountant:

Make sure your accountant is fully qualified, it is very easy to overlook this step and end up hiring someone who talks the talk but ultimately fails to back it up.

For small businesses it is essential that your accountant works with other small business clients. If you work in a particular niche industry, i.e. online retail make sure that they have the necessary experience in dealing with the issues that crop up in that particular industry.

How much does the accountant charge? Is there a fixed annual or monthly fee to complete all business tax requirements, or do hourly fees apply? Compare the fees of several firms.

Don’t just go for the first accountant you meet, try to meet at least three and meet face to face to discuss your business. As time goes on it will be important to have developed a good relationship with your accountant so bear that in mind when selecting.

What other services does the accountant provide – can they complete your self assessment returns?, do they provide any business advice or further information to help you grow your company?

Ask to speak to existing clients before signing up. A decent accountancy firm should be happy to arrange this, but bear in mind they are only going to put you in touch with happy clients.

Selecting the right accountant for your company is vital, trying to run your business and manage all of the accounts is not a wise decision so hiring an accountant should be a no brainer decision. Use the tips above to ensure you select the right accountant for your business.

It is important for any business (whether it is a large organisation or a sole trader business) to know how much and what type of stock they have on hand. Stock refers to all the goods a retailer has in store. It includes all items on the shelves and fixtures and all items in the storage areas.

The aim of stock control is to try to balance the amount of goods a retailer has in the store against the amount of sales that the store makes. A business will try to maximise it’s stock turnover while carrying the least amount of stock possible. Not enough stock leads to lost sales. Too much stock could lead to the need for marking down the stock in order to turn it over, which reduces the margin.

An effective stock control system will minimise stock loss through reducing errors, reducing waste and minimising theft. It will help reduce the costs associated with stock loss, increase sales and ultimately increase profits.

Efficient stock control reduces the risk of accidents and injury through good housekeeping, as well as reducing the costs of insurance, workers’ compensation payments and the time lost by injured staff. Having a neat, tidy clean store creates a very good impression with the customers, encouraging them to enter the store and make a purchase. It also helps staff feel positive and enjoy their working environment.

Efficient stock control, including stock rotation systems, means old stock does not accumulate and pass the use-by date or become obsolete or out of fashion.

In summary, efficient stock control policies and procedures reduce costs, increase sales and therefore increase profit.

Book and record keeping is part of running a business. Just like a large business, a small business needs to do some recording of its financial and business data. Too often however the limited budget of a small business owner compels him to multitask. So he ends up doing a lot of things and assuming a lot of roles to keep the business rolling.

But today, an entrepreneur can unload the task of small business bookkeeping by designating it to third party service providers. This allows the entrepreneur to free some of his time, which he can use for other responsibilities and tasks such as business planning.

Keeping and organising records is a mundane task that should not take up the precious time of a business owner but should be delegated to a bookkeeper. There are other tasks more important for the business owner to handle, and directing the course of the company is one. But if the owner wears too many hats, he could be paralysed and unable to focus on the more important responsibilities.

Getting help from providers of bookkeeping services is the trend nowadays because it proves to be a more affordable option for small budgeted businesses as compared with hiring someone the traditional way. This method of enlisting professional help eliminates the need to spend for the recruitment process because the service provider already fills in that need. They assume the responsibility of selecting the best staff, training them, and providing tools for them.

With that, the only thing that the business owner has to pay for is the output or service. There is even a guarantee service quality, consistency, and continuity.

Thus, Accountant very important role in the successful running of a company. However, accounting is a vast field, as there are different types of accounting careers available to choose from for the different aspiring students who want to become the accountant. Some of different field of accounting are:

• Certified Public Accountant
• Forensic Accountant
• General Accountant
• Comptroller
• Chief Financial Officer
• Internal Auditors
• Government Accountant

Each of these fields has different set of pecuniary responsibilities to carry out. The type of accounting career you choose, decides the educational requirements to become the accountant. However basic education is same; you should have a Bachelor’s degree with accounting as your main subject, along with subjects like economics and finance.

Unfortunately, students who have chosen accounting as their career after graduation are not earning very good, as compared to the one who enter this field after completion of masters in a particular field. Advance training in accounting helps you to earn a lot, as according to a survey conducted in US, an average accountant salary is around $92,000 per annum. Nowadays, even online accounting programs have become very popular, as people can do their studies while sitting in their office or in home.

Depending on the country, there are different tax advantages in living overseas. Many countries do not tax their citizens working abroad at all. While Americans living abroad are legally required to file their tax forms, their US tax liability is much lower.

For Americans expats working overseas, the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion is a major benefit. With it, more than $90,000 a year of earned income is legally tax free ($91,500 for the 2010 tax year). Expatriate Tax Advice will take a look at this tax break, how to qualify, why the government grants it and ways to take advantages of it.

One way to qualify for this exclusion is to be a bona fide resident. Taxpayers can qualify for this when they reside in another country for an entire tax year from the first of January through December 31st.

For those who do not meet the bona fide resident test, they can still earn the exclusion from income taxes if they reside overseas at least 330 days in a 12-month period (this does not need to be within a single tax year).

Also, in the case of those who have moved overseas but have not been there long enough yet to qualify for the exclusion, it is still possible to claim it as long as they plan to remain overseas until they do. However, the amount of the exclusion will be prorated for the amount of time spent overseas.

There are reasons many countries give tax breaks to their citizens living abroad. Those living abroad are not using the services of their native countries. Also, since those working abroad usually have to pay taxes in the country they are working in; forcing them to pay taxes in their native countries would result in double taxation. Furthermore, it would make them more expensive to employ. For example, if Americans working abroad had to pay American taxes on top of those in the country they were working in; their real earnings would be much lower than those from other nations. This would make them more expensive to employ since Americans would need to make more to get the same wage.

The best job opportunities will be for accountants and auditors who have a college degree, any type of certification, but primarily for those with a CPA.

Job growth is expected over the next decade (ending in 2016) due to tighter regulations.

Increased globalization will also result in higher demand for accounting professionals and services connected to international trade, rules, mergers and acquisitions.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 was passed by Congress as a result of a number of high profile, large corporate scandals – it was designed to greatly reduce accounting fraud at the corporate level. This legislation makes it requirement for public companies to maintain well-functioning internal controls to ensure the accuracy and reliability of their financials. It also holds the company’s chief executive personally responsible for falsely reporting financial information.

These mandated changes should lead to higher scrutiny of corporate finances and accounting procedures and should create opportunities for accountants and auditors, especially CPAs, to more thoroughly audit financial records.

After graduation, a person can join many other professional organizations. AICPA, or the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, is a very popular association for professionals in the field. The AICPA provides training classes, seminars, and networking opportunities for people to share ideas and best practices. Other groups, such as the American Society of Women Accountants, Institute of Internal Auditors, and National Association of Black Accountants are all organizations established to provide their members services, support, and resources. Many associations exist at the state level, and there are even international chapters for some groups. There is usually an annual fee to join and costs to attend training and seminars. Most associations have a code of professional conduct, membership requirements, and bylaws to follow. For the most part, the benefits of membership outweigh the nominal expense, in that you can meet others in your field and discuss future trends and perspectives in the industry.

Membership in an association is valuable for many reasons. Conferences are held on specific topics, such as taxes, information technology, law, forensics, and valuation, where you can learn about latest trends and future perspectives in the field. You can benefit by the publications, such as Journal of Accountancy, and news the association has to offer. There are many community activities and advocacy groups to join. In addition, members might receive discounts on products and services such as loans, computers, and car rentals. Many associations give special recognition awards to honorary members who have provided exemplary service. Sometimes these awards are given to people who have distinguished themselves during a public service activity or who have made a significant impact on the profession. These awards can come with monetary prizes or trips, but the recognition these awards carry in the field is priceless.
